Uncle says it starts with the roots! Here are the simple 6-step idiot-proof guidelines the Green Team recommends:
- Step 1: Pick the perfect spot that ensures your shrub will get the right amount of sunlight and water.
- Step 2: Dig wide, not deep. Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot and just deep enough so the top of the root ball sits slightly above ground level. This helps with drainage and keeps the roots happy.
- Step 3: Loosen those roots. Shrubs often get “root bound” in their pots. You may need to gently untangle or clip any circling roots before planting.
- Step 4: Carefully the shrub from the nice soil in the pot to the clay soil in the ground. Then, support the roots by backfilling the hole with a 50/50 mix of your native soil + Uncle’s Max Mix. This gives the shrub a soft landing zone and helps roots adapt faster. Don’t forget to tamp out air pockets as you fill!
- Step 5: Mulch like a pro. Mulch helps hold moisture and keeps weeds away.
- Step 6: Water and feed your shrub or tree. Give it a big drink and a dose of Uncle’s Root Accelerator once a month for the first year to kick-start growth.
Now, all that may seem confusing, but there’s no need to worry! If you’re unsure about anything, you can find a more in-depth guide to successful tree and shrub planting in our blogs. And as always, the Green Team is always ready to offer their help if you have questions or concerns.
Yes, you should use mulch around your shrubs. Mulch helps lock in moisture, keeps weeds out, and protects roots from the heat and the cold.
Just remember: don’t bury the trunk. Leave a few inches of space between the mulch and the base of your shrub. If you’ve got more questions, you can check out Uncle’s handy mulch guide or give your closest Grass Pad store a call.
Yes, shrubs do need fertilizer. A well-fed shrub grows stronger roots, fights off stress, and handles Midwest weather like a champ. Uncle always says, “feed it right, and it’ll treat you right.” The Green Team has fertilizer blended just for Kansas City and Omaha lawns, so your shrubs get exactly what they need.
The best times to fertilize are in spring and fall. We recommend starting with Uncle’s Root Accelerator once a month for the first year when you plant because this helps roots settle in fast. After that, give your shrubs a boost every spring to kick off healthy growth, and again in the fall to strengthen them before winter rolls in.
Uncle’s got a simple rule of thumb: the 3-2-1 method. Water deeply 3 times a week during the first week, 2 times the second week, and 1 time every week after that. Deep watering is the key—not just a quick sprinkle. You want the water to reach the entire root ball so the roots grow down, not up, when looking for moisture. If the weather is hot, dry, or windy (which we all know is a regular occurrence in Kansas City and Omaha), don’t be afraid to water more often.
For the first year, consistency is more important than volume. The goal is to help your shrub (or tree) establish a strong root system before it has to face its first summer or winter. If you’re not sure if you’re doing it right, stop in (or call) and talk to the Green Team—they’ll get you sorted.
