Every plant you’ll find here is hand-picked to handle the ups and downs of the unpredictable Midwest weather. Hot, humid summers, surprise spring frosts, dry spells, and everything in between. We’ll ensure your nursery stock selections are tough enough to handle all types of weather to help make planting Idiot Proof.
We’ve spent decades testing and selecting trees, shrubs, flowers, and perennials that mesh well with the climate in Kansas City and Omaha. When you plant Grass Pad nursery stock, you’re planting with confidence.
Picking the right plant from our nursery stock starts with a few simple questions:
- How much sun does your lawn get?
- Is the soil heavy clay, sandy, or somewhere in between?
- How much time do you want to spend watering
Don’t worry, you don’t have to figure it out alone—we’ve seen it all. The Green Team will help you match the right trees, shrubs, or flowers to your lawn’s unique conditions and your schedule. Plus, we’ll show you the Idiot Proof steps to plant it like a pro, no green thumb required.
Planting is simple when you know the basics: dig the right hole, mix in good soil, water well, feed with Root Accelerator and mulch. For extra tips, ask the Green Team or check out Uncle’s full planting guide. We will help you get it right the first time.
Don’t wait too long—bulbs are like donuts; the best ones go fast! At Grass Pad, we begin stocking spring-flowering bulbs, including popular varieties like tulips and daffodils, in our plant nursery starting in September. To ensure a vibrant bloom come spring, the Green Team recommends planting these bulbs before the ground freezes. Most gardeners in the Midwest aim to plant from mid-September through November, giving bulbs ample time to establish roots.
For a spectacular spring show, consider planting a mix of early, mid, and late-season blooming tulips alongside daffodils. This Uncle-approved strategy ensures continuous color and interest in your garden throughout the spring months.
Tulips are renowned for their stunning array of colors and are a favorite for creating eye-catching spring displays. Daffodils, with their cheerful yellow blooms, are not only beautiful but also deer-resistant and easy to grow. Both tulips and daffodils thrive when planted in well-drained soil with plenty of sunlight.
Bulbs love well-drained soil and full sun. At Grass Pad, we typically recommend planting them in garden beds, borders, containers, or even lawns. You’ll just need to avoid spots that stay wet or places you’ll need to mow early in the spring.
Just give ‘em a squeeze! Healthy bulbs should feel firm, not squishy. Don’t worry about a few scrapes or missing skin, but steer clear of any that are soft, moldy, or smell funny. When you visit us, if you’re unsure of which blurbs are right for you, just ask any member of the Green Team. We’re always happy to help you get your lawn looking just the way you want.
