PREVENT crabgrass pre-emergent

PREVENT!®
and New Seed
Overseeding or Spot Seeding

Full strength PREVENT® should not be used over the top of new seed. PREVENT® may stop the grass seed from germinating just as it does with crabgrass and foxtail. If you are overseeding a large area in the springtime:

  • Apply GOLF COURSE STARTER® on the day the seed is planted.
  • Apply TUPERSAN® or SIDURON granules before April 10th. An application of TUPERSAN® granules will give 85% control of all annual grasses for a period of six weeks. This is not as effective as other crabgrass products, but it is the only one which allows new seeding.
  • After six weeks, when your new seed is two inches tall, apply a full strength application of PREVENT®. This will be approximately the end of May and will protect your lawn all summer long.
For scattered small bare spots, apply PREVENT® first and water it in. Then wait 3 days. Use a heavy rake and scratch the surface of each bare spot and topdress these barespots with 3/8 to 1/2 inch PRIMERAFC seed dressing then apply your seed. Cover seed with additional 1/4 inch PRIMERAFC seed dressing. DO NOT USE TOPSOIL. Topsoil contains weed seeds. Keep damp with frequent light waterings. The grass seed will sprout well and not be damaged by  the PREVENT® because of the seed dressing buffer.
